Types of Aid

Undergraduates are eligible for three types of financial aid:

  1. Scholarships and grants
  2. Loans
  3. Work-study employment

The Office of Financial Aid (OFA) administers most financial aid programs for which undergraduates are eligible. The majority of programs are based on demonstrated financial need. Contact this office for information about the financial aid application process and program information. Students going abroad are encouraged to discuss their plans with an OFA advisor who specializes in study abroad.

New students should apply for financial aid by March 1 (for the Fall term) in order to receive equal consideration. Students who plan to enter in another term should apply at least eight weeks before the start of that term. Continuing students (including cross-campus transfers) must apply by the deadlines announced by the Office of Financial Aid. It is necessary to reapply for aid each year.

Other scholarships, grants, and short-term loans are available through the Office of Financial Aid. All students may apply for emergency and/or short-term loans from this office for educational or education-related expenses. In addition, OFA assists students with budgeting, and helps students locate other financial resources. Students are encouraged to use the Office of Financial Aid counseling services even if they are not receiving direct financial assistance.

Emergency Support

Emergency/Enrichment Fund for Kinesiology Students

The Emergency/Enrichment Fund for Kinesiology Students is a discretionary fund used for students who have unexpected financial needs.

Dean of Students Emergency Fund

Dean of Students Office Emergency Funds are available to students who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses due to temporary hardship related to an unforeseen or emergency situation. The goal is to provide flexible assistance in a timely manner to help students continue successfully in school.

The following are external, non-University scholarship opportunities that may be of interest to University/College students. Inclusion of an external scholarship opportunity is intended only as a resource for students, and does not express or imply any University involvement with, or endorsement of, the external program.

School of Kinesiology Scholarships

Thanks to alumni and donor support, the School of Kinesiology also has a small number of scholarships (listed below) that are available to incoming first-year students based upon merit and/or financial need. Kinesiology students are automatically considered for these scholarships when they complete an admission application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and/or College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE. Monetary values range from $1,000 to $40,000 per year. Most of these are renewable for four years.

  • Applied Fitness Solutions Scholarship. Awarded to a student with a 3.5 GPA or higher who has a desire to gain practical experience in the health and fitness industry. Not renewable.
  • Stephen & Jeannine Galetti Scholarship. Awarded to an incoming Kinesiology first-year student who qualifies for financial aid. Preference given to a student intending to major in Applied Exercise Science or Sport Management.
  • Jeanne C. Galley Fund. Awarded to a high-achieving female undergraduate student in Kinesiology.
  • Jake Goldberg Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a Sport Management undergraduate student who qualifies for financial aid. Learn more about this scholarship.
  • Shelly Kovacs Scholarship. Awarded to an incoming Kinesiology first-year student who qualifies for financial aid and has demonstrated strong academics.
  • Bernard “Pat” Maloy Scholarship. Awarded to an incoming Kinesiology first-year student who qualifies for need-based financial aid. Preference given to students who have been touched by cancer - either themselves or an immediate family member.
  • Managers and Athletic Trainers Scholarship (MATS). Awarded to a student who works with a U-M varsity team as an unpaid manager or athletic trainer.
  • New York Family Scholarship. Awarded to an incoming Kinesiology first-year student from the metropolitan New York area whose parents are firefighters, police officers, or teachers and qualifies for need-based financial aid. Preferential consideration is given to applicants who lost one of their parents in the attack on New York City on September 11, 2001.
  • Ross I. Schleifer Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a Kinesiology undergraduate student from the State of New York who qualifies for financial aid.
  • Charles Woodson Endowed Scholarship Fund. Awarded to an incoming Kinesiology first-year student who qualifies for financial aid. The scholarship will assist a student majoring in Kinesiology from Fremont, OH; Detroit, MI; Oakland, CA; Chicago, IL; or Houston, TX. Learn more about this fund.

 

School of Kinesiology Awards

The following Kinesiology awards, available to continuing Kinesiology students (listed below chronologically by year of establishment), are named in honor of notable former Kinesiology faculty and graduates.

Interested Kinesiology students must apply for these awards. There are two application forms -- please read carefully and use the form applicable to the award you're applying for:

Recipients are chosen by an awards committee and recognized at Spring Commencement.

  • The Paul A. Hunsicker Memorial Award honors the memory of Professor Paul Hunsicker, Chair of the Department of Physical Education for Men, 1958-70 and Director of the Department of Physical Education, 1970-76. The award recognizes one graduate and one undergraduate student who have demonstrated superior scholarship and professional zeal and promise.
  • Lucile M. Swift, BS '39, created the Lucile M. Swift Honor Award to financially assist a Kinesiology student who demonstrates professional promise, superior scholarship, as well as financial need. Two scholarships will be presented to rising seniors to offset tuition expenses associated with an unpaid spring or summer internship. (Internship must be confirmed at time of application.
  • The Stephen J. Galetti Award honors the first Chair of Kinesiology's Department of Sport Management who retired in 1988. It is presented to a first- or second-year student who shows exceptional industriousness and potential.
  • The Phyllis Ocker Scholarship is named for Assistant Professor Phyllis Ocker, Associate Director of Athletics for Women, 1978-90. It is presented to a female varsity athlete, sophomore or junior, in Sport Management or Physical Education who has distinguished herself in academics and athletics. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • The Laurie Campbell Award is presented to an outstanding student majoring in Physical Education. It was established by former students of Dr. Campbell, who taught in the Department of Physical Education for Women from 1929-59, in honor of her 100th birthday July 18, 1994.
  • Friends of the late Stanley S. Kemp, BS '67, football official and business and civic leader, established the Stan Kemp Scholarship in 1994. It is designated for juniors, seniors, and graduate students who display Mr. Kemp's high character, leadership, scholarship, integrity and idealism. Five scholarships are presented each year.
  • Managers and Athletic Trainers Scholarship (MATS). Awarded to a student who works with a U-M varsity team as an unpaid manager or athletic trainer.
  • The Bernard Patrick Maloy Award for Excellence in Writing was first awarded in 2003. This award honors the memory of Professor "Pat" Maloy, a scholar and dedicated teacher who inspired his students to take an interest in real-world issues of sport and public policy, and particularly encouraged them to express their thoughts through clear and concise writing. The cash award is expressly for undergraduate Sport Management majors.
  • The Rachael G. Townsend Scholarship was presented for the first time in March 2005. This award honors a student majoring in Kinesiology who demonstrates a strong commitment to and involvement in physical education and/or athletics. The recipient must exemplify enthusiasm and a passion for furthering a higher quality of physical education through leadership, citizenship, and service to the community. Their dedication to Kinesiology should inspire others. To apply for the Rachael G. Townsend Scholarship, please use the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation application.
  • The Kinesiology Alumni Society Scholarship provides funds to a rising senior in good academic standing who has exhibited leadership and service to the School of Kinesiology, the university at large, or non-university community.
  • The Kinesiology Student Government (KSG) Award is awarded to Kinesiology juniors who show true leadership both inside and outside of the School of Kinesiology.
  • The Pat Van Volkinburg Travel Award was established in honor of Pat Van Volkinburg, Clinical Associate Professor Emerita of Health and Fitness and Kinesiology, for her 32 years of leadership excellence within the School of Kinesiology. This award supports third and fourth year Applied Exercise Science (AES) students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement through their GPA, and will be presenting at an AES-related conference (i.e. SHAPE America).

Study Abroad: GoGlobal!

Students going abroad are eligible to apply for supplemental travel awards through the Center for Global Opportunities. Applications are available on MCompass. 

 

Employment

In addition to work-study programs available through the Office of Financial Aid, many students find temporary or part-time employment on or near the campus. The Student Employment Office provides job listings and referral information for students seeking employment. Other sources of jobs are University Recruiting & Employment Services for both temporary and permanent jobs) and Michigan Medicine Human Resources Department (for University Hospital employment). The Michigan Daily and MLive also list employment opportunities.
