Bedar Noor

Bedar Noor (SM '19) is currently a business development consultant at Oracle. He spent a few minutes with us reflecting on his time in Kinesiology.
Tell us about what you have done since you graduated.
I had a couple of internships, one with Doner Advertising, and then another with Sponsor United. I learned a lot through those organizations, especially in marketing. Then right after that, I received an offer from Oracle to work for them. It was actually through a lot of the Michigan connections that I made. All those opportunities came from alumni who were connected with the organizations.
And then personally, learning how to really build relationships and network with the mentors that I've gained from the U-M connections. And just being a sponge and knowing how important it is to look up to people that are in these prime roles and really learn from them. That's something that made me successful at U-M, as well as professionally.
The best part of the Sport Management program is the steps they'll go to make sure you're prepared for the real world, which includes making sure they draw in as many resources as possible, including practitioners in the field.
Tell us a bit about your experience in the Sport Management master's program.
I really built relationships with a lot of the professors there, including [Sport Management Professor] Dr. [Ketra] Armstrong and a couple of the administrators, including Graduate Student Affairs Manager Charlene Ruloff. Being able to have that kind of hands-on experience with them, being my mentors and teaching me a lot in the classroom, as well as outside of the classroom, was something that was very important to me.
I got involved in a lot of different organizations, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated and the Muslim Student Association, which kept me busy outside of school and allowed me to get involved with a lot of the community service projects and social events they had.
How has your Sport Management degree contributed to your success?
We did a lot of case studies, and really had to utilize that creativity in a lot of our projects and assignments, which really made me more of a critical thinker instead of just memorizing information. Those are tools you use every day in the real world. They want you to think about how to create solutions, not just regurgitate information. And I think that the School of Kinesiology really prepared me well for practical settings along with obviously a scholarly settings.
In your opinion, what’s the best part about the program?
The best part of the Sport Management program is the steps they'll go to make sure you're prepared for the real world, which includes making sure they draw in as many resources as possible, including practitioners in the field. Bringing them in, talking to us, giving us real-life cases and bringing in people that you can build relationships with, that's the best part of the program.
What would you like prospective students to know about the program?
That alongside having an amazing education, you're also going to get an amazing experience with faculty, students, and alumni. It's a program that really prepares you for the real world, along with preparing you in the classroom.
