Austin Williams
Q: Out of everything you're working on right now, what are you most excited about and why?
A: I have a background in user experience research and design, so I often look at my work through the lens of usability. Our team develops reports, dashboards, and other data solutions for users throughout the school, but other audiences who might find value in these tools often rely on word of mouth to become aware of their existence. I’m excited about better understanding the needs of our current and future users and ideating on ways we can better serve them. By improving the visibility and usability of our solutions, we can properly showcase the capabilities of our Business Intelligence team and further position ourselves as a source of value for the school.
Q: How do you balance your time between the demands of your work and personal life?
A: I make a concerted effort to be in the moment. When I’m at work, I’m focused on my work; when I’m away from work, I’m focused on whatever else I’m doing. I also find it important to manage both the expectations others have of me and those I have of myself. There will be times when work may interfere with personal life and vice versa. Recognizing and accepting this truth has helped me set more realistic expectations and ultimately strike a positive balance between work and life.
Q: What's your favorite thing about our school and why?
A: I have been impressed by the school’s commitment to flexibility — appropriately enough — in meeting the changing needs of the discipline. While the specific offerings of the school have evolved throughout the years, the focus on furthering scholarship related to health and wellness has remained its driving force. This focus is resonating with current and perspective students who are more excited to join SoK than ever before. I’m happy I’m able to be a part of this growth and I can’t wait to see it continue.
Q: If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would it be and why?
A: New Orleans for sure! My top priority for any vacation is good food, and there is no shortage of that in New Orleans. The music, the culture, and the warm weather have all brought me back to the city multiple times and I can't wait to visit again next year.
Q: What's one thing you'd like to brag about (personally or professionally)?
A: During my two years of graduate school at the School of Information, I attended every home football game and went 15-0 as a student at the Big House.
