Professor Vic Katch and student

With a tenure extending well beyond the creation of the School of Kinesiology, Movement Science professor Dr. Victor Katch is retiring. He was honored at a party held June 12, 2015 in the Michigan League.

Joining the University of Michigan in 1972, Dr. Katch was an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education, which was then under the auspices of the School of Education. In 1973 he became the first head coach of the U-M women’s basketball team. The next year, having to choose between teaching and coaching, he opted for the former. Eventually becoming full professor, Dr. Katch was a respected researcher, and a popular instructor and mentor, for over 40 years.

Dr. Katch has received several prestigious awards and authored numerous books and articles, including the widely used textbook, Exercise Physiology: Energy, Nutrition and Human Performance. Its eight editions have sold over 350,000 copies since debuting in 1981.

A more comprehensive article on Dr. Katch’s career will be published in the upcoming issue of Kinesiology's Movement magazine.
