Associate professor of clinical practice Pat Van Volkinburg (a.k.a., “Pat Van”) recently retired after working 32 years in the School of Kinesiology – arriving as a Master’s student in January 1984, and retiring as associate dean of academic programs in December 2015.

Pat mentored a generation of physical education student teachers while she taught courses in PE (now health and fitness), sport management, and education. As academic program coordinator, she tended to an evolving Kinesiology curriculum for over 15 years.

Active in her profession, Pat served in many capacities in the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD; now named Shape America), as well as in the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD). She received the MAHPERD Honor Award for Distinguished Service in 2014.

At her retirement party Kinesiology Dean Ron Zernicke stated, “Pat’s favorite part of Kines will always be the people. Our students, faculty, and staff will always hold a special place in her heart.”
