Steve Broglio, Associate Professor of Athletic Training, has been named Chair for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Sports Concussion Common Data Element (CDE) Acute Subgroup.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), in conjunction with the Department of Defense (DOD), runs the Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR) database, where data from all DOD and NIH funded traumatic brain injury (TBI) research is stored upon completion. Three subgroups (acute, sub-acute, and chronic) will define the key variables and set the standard for what must be collected for sport concussion research.

The NIH CDE for sport concussion will establish a set of standard variables for NIH and DOD sponsored work on concussion. This will create a powerful database that merges data across studies that will be accessible to all researchers. The merged, big data, datasets will lead to faster and more comprehensive concussion surveillance and speed concussion research.
