Protecting Yourself Against COVID-19

  1. Stay home when sick: Anyone who is experiencing symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 (e.g. new cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, fever, fatigue), even mild symptoms, should avoid gatherings and seek testing. If you are sick, even if it is not COVID-19, students, faculty and staff should stay home.

  2. Get tested: It is recommended that everyone maintain a supply of home antigen tests, but testing is also available through a range of campus resources. Any U-M student or employee can obtain free testing if asymptomatic at the U-M COVID-19 Community Sampling and Tracking Program (CSTP) locations on campus. Students, if asymptomatic or symptomatic, can also self-schedule or call for an evaluation/test at UHS.

  3. Isolate if you have COVID-19: Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is expected to isolate for at least 5 days, and should wear a mask when around others for a full 10 days after diagnosis, even as symptoms improve.

  4. Wear a mask: Masking is strongly recommended in indoor spaces where maintaining social distancing is difficult, regardless of vaccination status. High filtration masks are available for free at CSTP sites and at community centers within the residence halls.

  5. Get vaccinated: Through partnerships with local retail pharmacies, vaccines are being offered at multiple campus locations, including convenient, walk-in clinics that do not require registration. These walk-in clinics currently offer flu shots and will offer updated COVID-19 booster shots when available.

What to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms and/or test positive for COVID-19

  • Students, contact University Health Service (UHS) and isolate.
    • Have an individual plan for isolation in the event you have a positive COVID-19 test.
    • Isolation spaces have been set aside for students living in university housing, but at this time the space is being actively filled and nearing capacity. While additional spaces are being identified, students who reside within a one-day drivable distance should expect to relocate to their permanent residence instead of requesting isolation space on campus.

  • Faculty & staff, contact your medical provider and isolate. Do not come to work.
    • Employees who are active on the MyUofMHealth.org patient portal should follow these instructions to assess eligibility for COVID-19 testing and to schedule an appointment.
    • Employees who are unable to access the patient portal should call U-M Occupational Health Services (OHS) at (734) 764-8021 and select prompt 1 to speak to a nurse. The phone line is available daily from 7am-5pm.
    • Complete this OHS survey to receive a customized, step-by-step guide for when and how long you need to quarantine, stay home from work, wear a mask, take additional tests, etc.
    • Asymptomatic employees should continue to utilize the Community Sampling and Tracking Program (CSTP) or seek testing within the community.

General

Mask & Vaccination Policies

U-M face covering policy

Masks are optional for indoor spaces on the University of Michigan campuses with the exception that masks remain required in patient care areas and at U-M COVID-19 testing sites.

Review the full policy, which will be adjusted as case levels change in the weeks and months ahead, and based on the overall state of compliance with our vaccination requirement.

U-M COVID-19 vaccination and booster policy

All U-M students, faculty and staff are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and to submit their vaccination information:

  • To report that you have received all doses of a vaccine series, submit information via the COVID-19 Vaccination Completed form.
  • To report that you have received one dose of a two-dose vaccine series, submit information via the Partial COVID-19 Vaccination form.
  • To report that you have received a booster shot, submit information via the COVID-19 Booster Information form.

A COVID-19 booster shot is now required for all faculty, staff and students, under a revised U-M vaccination policy.

SoK Building Policies

Building Health & Safety Protocols

The Kinesiology Building is optimized for health and safety. This includes:

  • Employee COVID-19 training. All employees coming to and/or working on campus are required to take COVID-19 training before entering any building. Minimally one of these training modules must be completed in MyLinc:
    • COVID-19: Working Safely at U-M
    • COVID-19: Working Safely in U-M Research Areas
  • Mandatory daily health screening. All students, faculty, staff, and visitors - regardless of vaccination status - are required to complete the health screening, via responsiblue.umich.edu or the ResponsiBLUE mobile app, every day before coming to campus. Both methods will give instructions on what to do if you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Masks in patient care and testing areas. All students, faculty, staff, and visitors - regardless of vaccination status - are required to wear masks in patient care and testing areas. Students who wish to request an exemption under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) should visit the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) website, which includes an intake form.
  • Syllabus statement. Class syllabi will include a statement that speaks to students’ responsibility to follow health and safety protocols: “Your participation in this course on an in-person basis is conditional upon your adherence to all safety measures mandated by the State of Michigan and the University of Michigan, including maintaining physical distancing of six feet from others, and properly wearing a face covering in class.”

As of 1/26/21, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test to all air passengers entering the United States. As detailed on the CDC Testing and International Air Travel page, requirements include:

  • Per the CDC, International air passengers are required to get a viral test (a test for current infection) within the 3 days before their flight to the U.S. departs, and provide written documentation of their laboratory test result (paper or electronic copy) to the airline or provide documentation of having recovered from COVID-19.
  • Get tested within 72 hours after travel AND stay home for 7 days after travel.
    • Testing appointments are available to all members of the U-M community throughout the winter term through the Community Sampling & Tracking Program.
    • Even if you test negative, stay home for the full 7 days.
    • If you don’t get tested, it’s safest to stay home for 10 days after travel.
  • Follow state and local recommendations or requirements related to travel.
  • Follow U-M COVID-19 Enhanced Social Distancing protocols.
  • Delay your travel if you are waiting for test results.

See the International Center website for additional guidance for international students, scholars, and employees.

Family Care

As school districts across the state make decisions about K-12 education this fall, the university recognizes that you and your colleagues with children may face continuing challenges with child care and work-life balance.

Throughout the pandemic, the health and well-being of our faculty, staff, and students has been our priority, and we remain committed to flexibility for faculty and staff faced with extraordinary circumstances. Everyone in supervisory roles should use discretion and flexibility during the coming months when determining employee schedules.

Many employees will continue to work remotely, but flexible schedules may still be needed to balance added caregiving and educational duties in the home. We continue to require that everyone who can work from home do so. Some employees may need to be on campus to deliver in-person services that cannot be provided virtually. We encourage supervisors to consider adjusted schedules whenever possible for employees who request them.
