Description

The purpose of this course is to prepare students for the advanced theoretical and practical aspects of prescribing physical activity as therapeutic exercise, for a wide array of conditions and diseases across populations. Course content explores the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, disease implications and therapeutic interventions, with an emphasis on acute and chronic responses to exercise. Recognition of comorbidities and clinical contraindications to design safe and effective exercise programs is the main objective. Curriculum will cover cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, immunological, neuromuscular, psychological, sensory, and cognitive disorders. The course is designed to provide an understanding of the pathophysiology and exercise responses within specific clinical populations, in preparation for professional work within communities, healthcare, or human performance. The curriculum will apply cellular understanding of pathophysiology into whole-body critical thinking, to design and prescribe therapeutic exercise for high-risk individuals.
