“I chose to attend U-M for Physical Education because the program really focuses on the different abilities and disabilities of children and how to be a great teacher.”
JoAnn -- Physical Education '08
Saginaw, MI
JoAnn plans to work as a Physical Educator at an inner city school after graduation.

Why did you choose to attend University of Michigan for Physical Education?
The program really focuses on the different abilities and disabilities of children and how to be a great teacher. The program also taught me how to be more than just a gym teacher, but to become a physical educator and display the importance of physical education and being physically active throughout an individual's lifespan.

What are your future career plans?
I plan on becoming a physical education and health teacher, and a girl's basketball and track coach at an inner city high school.

What work-related experience have you had?
I've worked for KidSport, where children from 4-13 years are given the opportunity to learn sport-specific skills, team building, and social skills. I've also been the U-M Women's Basketball Manager, where I assisted with running practice and recording statistics during the game. In addition, I've been a Head Start Volunteer where I worked with underprivileged children on improving their fine motor, social, and intellectual skills.

What is your biggest challenge when working with kids?
Time management and classroom management are my biggest challenges. Keeping a four-year old's attention while explaining how to play a game is also very challenging!
