“I love that U-M's Sport Management program combines business, the sciences, some mathematics
as well as sport-related subjects.”
Jessica -- Sport Management '10
Great Neck, NY

Jessica wants to work in management and promotions after graduation.

Why did you choose the University of Michigan to study Sport Management?
Some Kinesiology programs I explored only focused on the physiological and athletic training aspects of sports. I love that University of Michigan's Sport Management combines business, the sciences, some mathematics as well as sport-related subjects. The education is so well rounded and can lead me in many different directions and specialties.

What are your future career plans?
I can see my career leading me towards management and promotion of athletic events, or as an officer of an athletic organization or a non-profit such as Special Olympics. Someone in that position has to understand accounting, economics, be able to write well and have broad-based knowledge of sports, sporting history and current management theory.

Was the transition from high school to college difficult for you?
The transition was surprisingly easy. I think that being in Kinesiology helped ease the transition because it feels like a “school within a school”. The faculty is so helpful, and you can really feel comfortable going to them about anything. I also like that many of the Kinesiology classes are smaller, so not all of my classes were in huge lectures.

Since you just started at Michigan a year ago, what advice would you give to a high school student?
The advice I would give is to come here! Don't be afraid that Michigan is too big a school, you definitely won't get lost. There are so many clubs, activities and great opportunities that Michigan offers and the people here are great. When you come to school, try to get involved in as much as possible. Also, use this last year in high school to think about what you are interested in, and when you get to college pursue these things — even if they're random. Don't be afraid to try new things, because you have nothing to lose.
