“Movement Science is the one major where a pre-med student can really focus on the human body as a medical student would.”

Christina -- Movement Science '11
Shelby Township, MI

Christina plans to attend graduate school to be a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.).

Why did you choose to study Movement Science as preparation for medical school?
Movement Science is the one major where a pre-med student can really focus on the human body as a medical student would. By majoring in Movement Science, I will have already learned about the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. In a way, I'll be ahead of the game compared to other pre-med students who didn't major in Movement Science.

What are your future career plans?
I plan on going to Osteopathic medical school to become a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine (D.O.). I really like the holistic approaches of D.O.s and their focus on the musculoskeletal system. As of now, I can see myself specializing in Sports Medicine or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, but that could change after my rounds during medical school. I would also like to own a private practice with a few other doctors in a rural or suburban setting.

What opportunities have you taken advantage of outside of Kinesiology to prepare you for graduate school?
I have been involved with the Health Science Scholars Program (HSSP). In the program I was able to job shadow doctors to help decide a future career path. I was also given leadership and community service opportunities, and learned a lot about different aspects of healthcare. I also joined the Pre- Student Osteopathic Medical Association (Pre-SOMA) freshman year and have been actively involved with that ever since. Through the club, I was able to learn more about osteopathic medicine, get in-house hospice volunteer experience, and visit MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine.

What advice do you have for prospective students?
Whatever you choose to do or be involved in, do it because you love it, not because it looks good on an application or at an interview.
