Welcome!
To Our New Students,
Welcome to Kinesiology at the University of Michigan. The faculty, staff, and students are delighted you have chosen to join us. We hope your undergraduate experience will pave the way for your hopes and dreams. To that end, we have attempted to create a meaningful orientation process for you. But your work begins immediately as well; you must be an active participant in this process. Ask questions, research your options, talk to people — to your fellow students, advisors, your faculty. Take advantage of the golden opportunities that await you in the land of Maize and Blue.
This letter is intended to provide the initial resources you will need to be prepared for orientation.
We want you to start thinking about what you'd like to learn about, what courses might interest you. You need to retrain yourself to think outside of the high school box. You will be taking classes in Kinesiology as well as classes in Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). You can view Kinesiology and LSA course descriptions online.
While you can also view the degree requirements, try not to be too focused on specific requirements at this point. The starting point for planning your first term schedule is to assess your interests and strengths. If you are prepared to start our discussion with that, we can accomplish our primary mission for orientation.
We look forward to seeing you the afternoon of Day 2 of orientation. The Kinesiology Office of Student Services staff and our Peer Advising Team will be here to work with you. You will have a chance to meet individually with your Kinesiology advisor both Day 2 before you plan your schedule and Day 3 before and after you register for classes.
Congratulations, and Welcome to Kinesiology!
Sincerely,

Shelly Kovacs
Kinesiology Director of Student Services

Orientation Itinerary
Day 2
Today you will begin the Kinesiology Academic Advising portion of orientation.
1:00pm
Attend your Group Advising Meeting. In a group setting you will meet your academic advisor and learn about Kinesiology degree requirements and basic college policies and procedures.
2:30-5:00pm
During this timeframe you will have a 20-minute scheduled appointment with your Academic Advisor. You will begin a conversation about courses for the Fall Term, discussing your goals, interests, and level of preparation. You'll also receive your placement exam results. (If you have taken any Advanced Placement exams, please let your advisor know).
6:45pm
If you are a member of a Living/Learning Community, meet with a representative from your program. They will provide information on special courses and course sections which are being held for you, and they will explain how to register for those courses.
7:30pm
Meet with your Peer Advisor. You will spend two hours in a computer classroom with your peer advisor learning how to use the LSA Online Course Guide and Wolverine Access, and make a list of 5 to 6 courses with which you will create your Fall Term schedule. You will also be able to ask your peer advisor questions about academics at Michigan. A lot of thought should go into the list of courses you compile. They should be courses that you are interested in and which you would like to take.
When you finally register, you may find that some courses on your list are closed, conflict with another course, or require some additional preparation. Should that happen, you want to be ready to substitute another course that is equally satisfying. Your list should also include Distribution courses (Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences). This is an ideal time to explore new subject areas or pursue topics that interest you.
Day 3
8:00am – 12:00pm
Register. This morning you will meet again with your academic advisor at our registration site. As you make a final selection of Fall courses, your OSS and peer advisors will be there to guide you.
NOTE: While most students finish registering for classes by noon, actual ending time varies. If you’re traveling by air, schedule your return flight for after 4:00pm. If you are auditioning for Marching Band, schedule your flight for after 7:00pm. You are welcome to have lunch before heading home.
