Post-Orientation

After you leave orientation, the University isn’t really done orienting you and helping you get settled. Once you come back to campus be sure to take advantage of these other resources:

Buying (and selling) books

While local bookstores have book lists provided by your instructors, you might want to wait until you get the course syllabus (usually the first day of class) to make sure that there aren’t changes.

To get the textbooks you need for class (and sell them back when you're done), you can shop at:

  • Michigan Book and Supply, Ulrich’s, Shaman Drum, or the Michigan Union Bookstore. These campus and near-campus bookstores sell new and used academic texts. The used textbooks are in good condition at cheaper-than-new prices.

  • Student Book Exchange, a student-run organization that buys and sells books at the beginning of each semester. While the Exchange has great prices, their title selection and availability varies.

  • U-M Marketplace (U-M kerberos password required).

  • Dorm and campus bulletin boards.

Sharing books is by far the cheapest, but you have to find a friend who has already taken or is currently taking your course.

Use the library! You do not need to buy every book on your syllabus. Books and videos for most classes should be on reserve. If they're not, ask your professor to put them on reserve. Exercise your right to equal access to educational materials. Check out the books, music, and videos at the University's libraries.
