Advising

Kinesiology Advising

Academic advising is viewed as an integral part of the educational process. All undergraduate Kinesiology students are assigned advisors. After students declare a major, they transition from an Office of Student Services (OSS) Advisor to Faculty Advisors. Although students are responsible for knowing and meeting requirements that appear in the Kinesiology Bulletin, they are strongly encouraged to consult with their faculty advisor or an OSS advisor each term to plan an individualized curriculum and monitoring progress toward a degree. Beyond the approval of course elections, the relationship between advisor and student can be a valuable aspect of the educational experience.

How do I know who my faculty advisor is?

Find the information in the following places:

When do I talk to an advisor?

You should meet with your faculty advisor or Office of Student Services (OSS) advisor to:

  • Understand Kinesiology degree requirements for graduation.
  • Become familiar with college policies and procedures.
  • Explore career interests.
  • Discuss academic problems or personal concerns.
  • Find out about useful campus resources
  • Learn to improve study and time management skills.
  • Explore options at the first sign of any difficulties — academic or otherwise.
Office of Student Services (OSS) Advising Services
  • Individual advising appointments. Call (734) 764-4472 to schedule an appointment to see an advisor.
  • Walk-in Advising. Check with your advisor to find out when OSS offers “no appointment necessary” walk-in advising.
  • E-mail Advising. E-mail your advisor at any time with questions or concerns. However, sometimes it’s best to schedule an advising appointment if the question is a lengthy one. Your advisor may determine that your question requires a face-to-face discussion and will reply indicating than an advising appointment is necessary for further discussion.

Peer Advisors

Welcome to the University of Michigan! We can confidently say that you are about to enter a new phase of your life where you will learn more about yourself and your place in the world than you probably ever imagined. Have you ever thought about what it would be like to read a couple hundred pages a week in a textbook? Where are good places to go on a Friday? What is the professor for Econ 101 really like? Is it actually possible to pull off a fifteen page essay in one night? Or maybe what it is like to have new opportunities about a subject open up before your eyes? Do these thoughts get you excited? Nervous? Maybe a little scared?

Well, as part of orientation you have a GREAT resource right at your fingertips. We're called Kinesiology Peer Advisors and we're here to provide just a little more help. Not that the academic advisors aren't great resources, they are! But, as current students we know what it is like to be in your shoes. Ask us questions about classes: which ones are good to take, which ones are fun, who is a good professor to take, etc. We are also a great resource for any questions you have about campus life, but are afraid to ask (don't worry, we won't tell your parents!). We're here to make your transition to this university as smooth as possible… and remember, we're going through much of the same things that you are. Good luck and enjoy your years here at U-M! We look forward to meeting you at orientation.
