Get Ready

Begin your overseas experience in three easy steps:
get a passport

1. Apply for a passport.
U.S. citizens can go to the Department of State's website and download an application. Follow the links to find the closest location. In Ann Arbor, apply at the post office on Liberty Street, Stadium Avenue, or Green Road; or at the Washtenaw County courthouse on North Main Street.

2. Identify a program.
The detailed Go Global Resource List provides links to several sites where you can sort by academic term and location to find the study abroad, internship, research or service opportunity that’s right for you. Additional materials available at the GoGlobal site at www.ctools.umich.edu, accessible to anyone with a umich.edu email account (how to join a CTools site). You may also look through the links saved on Sandy's del.icio.us account.

3. Find funding.
Financial aid packages transfer for U-M-sponsored study abroad programs. Supplemental funding is available for some kinds of international programs. Several sources are included in the Go Global Resource List. In addition, competitive travel awards are available to currently enrolled undergraduate Kinesiology students. Apply for supplemental funding from the School of Kinesiology by completing our application and submitting it to kinesgoglobal@umich.edu. Deadlines each year are March 15 and November 15. Students are encouraged to submit their applications when plans become final.

“[A]s President, I'd like to find new ways to connect young Americans to young people all around the world, by supporting opportunities to learn new languages, and serve and study, welcoming students from other countries to our shores. . . Simple exchanges can break down walls between us. . . .”
— President Barack Obama
