Troubleshooting Guide

This page is to help you diagnose and resolve the most commonly reported problems.

First step for almost any problem: Save any work you have open and restart your computer.

Often this will resolve the problem.

Next step:

Determine the extent of the problem. Are you the only one in your area with this problem? Try a nearby computer and/or ask someone to try yours.

Symptoms and solutions

Cannot log in at the Novell screen. Possible causes:

  • Wrong or incorrectly typed password
  • Account is locked or has expired
  • Try:
    1. Retyping password
    2. Restarting the computer
  • No luck? Contact Kin-Help.

You're able to log in at the Novell sign-in screen, but the H, L, M, or T drives are missing. Possible causes:

  • You may be logged in under “Workstation Only”
  • Kinesiology network or server problem
  • Your ethernet cable may not be plugged into either your computer or an active wall jack, or may be damaged.
  • Try:
    1. Logging out, then try to log back in again. Make sure that “Workstation Only” is NOT checked;
    2. Ask if anyone else in your area is having the same problem. If not:
    3. Check the ethernet cable for crimps and make sure it's plugged securely into both your computer and an active wall jack
    4. Locate the bright red “N” in the bottom right menu tray. Right-click on it and select Novell Login. Try logging in that way and see if the network drives appear.
  • No luck? Contact Kin-Help.

Program not functioning well, or your computer "locks up." Possible causes:

  • Software conflict or it's not installed correctly;
  • Have you run the program before? Has anything changed on your machine since the last time you ran this program (new software, new hardware, other people using the computer)?;
  • Virus or spyware has infiltrated your machine;
  • Too many processes going on at the same time;
  • Try:
    1. Closing the program;
    2. If it won't close, type CNTL-ALT-DEL and choose the Task List tab. If a program indicates “Not Responding,” select it and click End Program;
    3. Restarting the computer
  • No luck? Contact Kin-Help.

Cannot get to a website. Possible causes:

  • The website is down.
  • U-M's connection to the web is down
  • Hardware or network problem within Kinesiology
  • Try:
    1. Going to other web sites;
    2. Closing and reopening your web browser;
    3. Flushing your browser's cache (hold your Shift key down while selecting Refresh in your web browser);
  • No luck? Contact Kin-Help.
