Kin-Help

Kin-Help Contact Information

For prompt assistance please submit non-urgent requests for Kin-Help assistance to kinhelp@umich.edu. The request goes into a mailbox that all Kin-Help staff can access, and receipt of your request will be acknowledged.

The best way to reach Kin-Help for an urgent request is to call the general line at 4-4015. Using the general line better assures you of reaching one of the Kin-Help staff.

Accessing the Kinesiology Network Off-Site

You can access the Kinesiology network three ways, all via the web:

  • VPN (Virtual Private Network).  FAQs   Downloads
  • NetDrive allows you to access drives at home just like you do in the office -- via a drive letter on your home network. You need high-speed internet access and a Windows XP-based machine to take advantage of its features, though. NetDrive won't work for Windows Vista or Mac users.
  • NetStorage also allows users to access their network files, and is the better alternative for dial-up users. For best results, use Internet Explorer if you work on a Windows machine; use Safari if you work on a Mac. Because of recent server reconfigurations, you can now transfer more than one file at a time, and you can transfer file folders as well.

If you need assistance, please contact Kin-Help.

Software Available for Installation

Through our agreement with LS&A, we have access to a wide range of software. Check their list by selecting the icon of the operating system you're using (for most of us, that's Windows).

If you see something you want, please email Kin-Help with the title and version and we'll order it. We may already have the installation media on-hand, so please do not order anything yourself.

Borrowing Kin-Help Equipment

Kin-Help has laptops, portable projectors, a digital camera, and a camcorder available for faculty, staff, and graduate student use. You can check availability and book any of these items through Outlook. Unless other arrangements are made ahead of time, borrowers must come down to Kin-Help, 0101 Observatory Lodge, to pick up the equipment.

If you plan to take the borrowed item(s) to an off-campus location, you'll need to submit a Request for Removal and Use of University Property Form. Use this interactive form, completing only the highlighted fields, or complete a paper one when you pick up your item from Kin-Help.

Available Equipment
Laptops (3):
  • KIN CCRB Laptop Dashiell
  • KIN OBL Laptop Christie
  • KIN OBL Laptop Edgar
Portable LCD projectors (4)
  • Kin CCRB Projector Dell

Kin Digital Camera
Kin-Help is able to download your photos to the network, if you wish. There is a cable in the bag if you'd like to do it yourself, too.

Kin Camcorder (features, specs)
Users may need to supply their own blank Mini-DV tapes for the camcorder, so please purchase these in advance. Kindly recharge the camcorder after use.

You can also check the availability of the Kin Poster Printer in Outlook, but please contact Jean Hunt to reserve it and to assure her availability.

Kin-Help also has a slide scanner (not in Outlook), available upon request.

Slide and transparency projectors (and replacement bulbs) and TV/VCR carts can be reserved through one of the faculty support staff. Please contact Charlene Ruloff (Observatory Lodge) or Leona Cranford (CCRB). They also stock toner and ink cartridges for the printers.
