Areas of Interest

Short Description: Sports Economics, Industrial Organization, and Environmental and Resource Economics.

Dr. Winfree is a sports economist, whose primary research focuses on professional and collegiate athletics. This research encompasses fields of applied microeconomics and econometrics such as Industrial Organization, Labor Economics, and Public Economics. He studies the factors that affect attendance, ownership, and pay in Major League Baseball. These studies have shown that location, as well as venue and team quality affect demand for professional sports. He has also analyzed high school athletes' decisions to enter professional sports or go to college. Other research includes how collegiate athletic programs respond to NCAA regulations and violations.
