Areas of Interest

Short Description: Constructivist and interdisciplinary teaching approaches to facilitating students to achieve desired learning outcomes.

"My philosophy about teaching is that learning is active construction of knowledge. Learning occurs best when learners are involved in applying their knowledge into problem solving situations, when building a connection between learners' previous knowledge and life experiences and new knowledge, and learners interact with each other in both competitive and cooperative manners. As a teacher educator, I strongly believe that my major role is to create active learning environment in which students' inquiries, creativities, and problem-solvings are encouraged."

Doctoral Studies in Pedagogy

Doctoral students working with Dr. Chen will receive a solid grounding in theory and research in Physical Education Pedagogy. They will complete coursework in curriculum development, pedagogy, research methods, statistics, and several cognate areas (e.g., Education, Psychology). In addition, they will participate in several research projects that will allow them to develop as skilled scientists. More information on training in pedagogy may be obtained by contacting Dr. Chen.
