Katherine Babiak

About

Babiak's main line of research focuses on the interorganizational partnerships sport organizations create. These relationships can be in the form of partnerships, sponsorships or philanthropic interactions. She has explored the key strategic factors motivating sport organizations to enter into partnership relationships with other organizations in the non-profit, government and private sectors. Her research also examines the interaction and exchange dynamics involved in managing a diverse network of partners, with the objective to understand what factors are perceived to contribute to more effective relations between organizations.

Babiak's interest in interorganizational relationships has been extended to investigations of public-private partnerships, and of relationship marketing practices in both amateur and professional sport contexts such as the National Basketball Association, and the International Olympic Committee. Her most recent research project explores the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of professional sport organizations (NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL) to better understand why sport organizations choose to ally themselves with particular causes (such as the NBA's efforts in literacy), and how the organizations involved benefit from these CSR activities.

Description
Strategy of Sport Organizations --- This is a capstone class for Sport Management students. This course will study the links between the organization, its strategy and environment. Students will be required to integrate knowledge gained in the core sport management curriculum, including required and elective courses focused on specific functional areas (accounting, finance, marketing, and statistics). This class synthesizes these functional areas to provide a total enterprise perspective on strategy. Students will apply course concepts to the analysis of client-based projects.

Description
Human resources are argued to be an organization's most important asset. Effectively managing human resources enables an organization to survive and thrive in today's competitive environment. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the functions, the basic concepts, and the principles of Human Resource Management, and prepare them for their first sport related employment as either manager or employee. The course will explore HRM theories, research and discuss current issues, trends and practices emphasizing the fundamentals of managing individuals and groups.
