The 2009 Kinesiology Honors Dinner was held on March 12 in the Vandenberg Room of the Michigan League.

A listing of award recipients is below.

Kinesiology Departmental Awards

The Laurie Campbell Award is presented to a student for outstanding scholarship in a Physical Education major. Dr. Campbell taught in the Department of Physical Education for Women from 1929-59. The award was established by former students in honor of her 100th birthday. 2009 Recipient: Mark Chrzanowski.

The Stephen J. Galetti Award honors the first Chair of Kinesiology's Department of Sport Management who retired in 1988. It is presented to a first- or second-year student who shows exceptional industriousness and potential. 2009 Recipient: Ryan Knapp.

The Paul A. Hunsicker Memorial Award honors the memory of Professor Paul Hunsicker, Chair of the Department of Physical Education for Men, 1958-70 and Director of the Department of Physical Education, 1970-76. The award recognizes graduate and undergraduate students who have demonstrated superior scholarship and professional zeal and promise. 2009 Recipients: Daniel Schachne and Kristin Thomas (undergraduate); Beth Smith (graduate).

The Stan Kemp Scholarship is presented to students who display Mr. Kemp's dedication, integrity and idealism. It was established in 1994 by friends of the late Stanley S. Kemp, BS '67, football official and business and civic leader. 2009 Recipients: Paige Albers, Daniel Schachne, Adrianne Musick, and Matthew Lewis (Undergraduate); Brett Fling and Katie Jackson (Graduate).

The Bernard Patrick Maloy Award for Excellence in Writing, awarded for the first time in Spring 2003, honors the memory of Professor "Pat" Maloy, a scholar and dedicated teacher who inspired his students to take an interest in real-world issues of sport and public policy, and particularly encouraged them to express their thoughts through clear and concise writing. The cash award is expressly for undergraduate majors in the Department of Sport Management. 2009 Recipient: Brandon Armstrong.

The Phyllis Ocker Scholarship is awarded to a female varsity athlete who has distinguished herself in academics and athletics. It is named for Assistant Professor Phyllis Ocker, who was the Associate Director of Athletics for Women from 1978-90. 2009 Recipient: Roya St. Clair.

The Phebe Martha Scott Achievement Award is presented to outstanding students who are outgoing, friendly, helpful, involved in campus and sports activities, and beginning their senior year in physical education or a related field. 2009 Recipients: Mark Chrzanowski and Courtney McCormick.

The Lucile M. Swift Honor Award is presented to an undergraduate or graduate Kinesiology student who demonstrates professional promise. Lucile M. Swift (BS '39) created the award to help others attain the lifetime gift of education. A pioneer in the advancement of girls' athletics, she was a physical educator, physical therapist and humanitarian. 2009 Recipients: Michael Cantor (Undergraduate) and Brett Fling (Graduate).

The Rachael G. Townsend Scholarship honors a student majoring in Physical Education who demonstrates a strong commitment to and involvement in physical education and/or athletics. The recipient must exemplify enthusiasm and a passion for furthering a higher quality of physical education through leadership, citizenship, and service to the community. Their dedication to physical education should inspire others. 2009 Recipient: Mark Chrzanowski.

The Shirley Cooper International Research Fellowship was established by Tom and Sarah Templin in honor of Shirley Howard Cooper, a U-M physical education professor emerita. It is presented to doctoral students to assist in furthering research or scholarship through international travel. 2009 Recipient: no award given this year.

Angell Scholars

Angell Scholars are students who earn all A+, A, and A- grades for two consecutive terms based on a minimum of 14 credits earned each term; 12 of the 14 credits must be graded credits. Below are Kinesiology students who have achieved this high level of scholarship:

Branstrom Award

This award is for freshmen in the top 5% of their class (based on at least 14 graded credits at Michigan). A book with an inscribed nameplate is presented to each student, and a notation is made on the student's transcript by the Office of the Registrar. Kinesiology students earning this honor include:
