15 Helpful Hints for Incoming Graduate Students

1. First day of class is Tuesday, September 2, 2008. Registering for classes is done on the web via Wolverine Access.

2. Realize that you will enroll for fewer credit hours as a graduate student than as an undergraduate. A graduate student normally enrolls for 9-12 credit hours. The Time Schedule for Classes is available only on the web, via Wolverine Access.

3. We suggest that you consult with your advisor before registration. Master's students: Please note that your first-semester advisor may or may not be the right person for you. You are free to change advisors if you find one of our faculty members to have more suitable research interests to your own.

4. After you are registered, you can drop, add and modify courses for the first three weeks of the semester without penalty. After this date, you will need the permission of the instructor to drop a course. A "W" for withdrawal will appear permanently on your record. Deadlines and financial costs are associated with dropping or adding classes.

Warning: A student is not automatically dropped from a course even if s/he never attends a class. A course must be officially dropped, or an ED (failure) will appear on your record.

5. Tuition rates are currently (Fall 2006) $8,043 per term for in-state students, $16,371 per term for out-of-state residents. These amounts are based on your registering for 9-18 credit hours per term. These are subject to change each Fall.

Note: the U of M is strict about who qualifies for in-state tuition; please consult the residency classification guidelines.

6. Courses in other Rackham disciplines may be elected as cognates. When you sign up for a cognate, make sure the course is eligible for graduate credit by checking the graduate catalog online.

7. Students are strongly discouraged from taking Incompletes in their classes. A student has two semesters, including Spring/Summer, to make up incomplete work. Grading is on a nine point scale, with the highest grade being A+ (9). Students are required to maintain a B (5) average in Kinesiology and cognate courses.

8. At the beginning of the term, you will be placed on the "kingrad" email group. Please notify Eileen Brussolo (kingradcomm@umich.edu) if you have not received any emails from this group by the second week of the term.

9. Remember that course work is just part of your graduate education. Other suggestions for first-year students include:

  • joining relevant professional organizations in your field in order to receive the professional journal and take part in annual meetings.

  • working with a faculty member or fellow student on research projects. One goal would be to prepare a professional paper. There are opportunities to present student papers at local events, or at regional or national conventions. Most Master's-level students should seriously consider preparing a thesis based on research or scholarship activities.

  • applying your knowledge and expertise. Look for internship opportunities or other field experiences in area sport, health, and fitness organizations.
  • 10. Doctoral students with a GSI appointment must contact Pat Van Volkinburg for information on GSI Orientation.

    11. The beginning and end of each term are the worst times to use campus resources such as the cashier's office, campus computing sites, and bookstores. Arriving at these offices early in the day (e.g., 8:00 a.m.) will result in faster service.

    12. Given the busy nature of most professors' schedules, it is usually better to email them before stopping by their office. This is especially true in late summer and at the beginning and end of each semester.

    13. Most classes, unless otherwise specified by the professor, start ten minutes after the published time. This is referred to as "Michigan Time".

    14. In order to take advantage of the computing resources on campus, you need to obtain a uniqname and a password. A uniqname (pronounced "unique name") provides campus-wide identification. Once you are matriculated, Rackham will communicate how to get your uniqname. If you are already on campus, you may go to the Accounts Office and get a uniqname and password.

Note: Your uniqname and password give you access to valuable services. To guard against unauthorized use of these services in your name, do not divulge your password to anyone. Protecting your password is your responsibility.

    15. Housing. Almost every new graduate student is looking for housing. If you're looking for a roommate, try Roommate Matching Open House for U of M students. U-M Housing Office has other handy information, too.
