Congratulations! You're Graduating!
You have the option of two commencement ceremonies in the spring – Rackham’s and Kinesiology’s – and you can participate in one or both. Rackham's ceremony tends to be more formal in tone, while Kinesiology's is more personal.
To graduate you must apply through Wolverine Access: Student Business during the term you will complete your degree requirements. If you are finishing your degree requirements in December, May or August and want to participate in Kinesiology’s ceremony, please email Charlene Ruloff three weeks into the term that you are planning to graduate.
- Invitations will be sent to the local and permanent addresses you have listed on Wolverine Access and the U-M Directory. Please update those listings if necessary.
- If you need invitations sent to parents living at different addresses please contact Charlene Ruloff.
Academic attire is required to participate in each ceremony and can be purchased at the locations below. The tassel for your cap is sage green.

Two Ceremonies
The Rackham ceremony is Friday, May 1, at 1:00pm at Hill Auditorium. Graduates and candidates participating in this ceremony gather in Rackham Auditorium beginning at 11:45am (arriving no later than 12:15pm), to participate in the academic procession to Hill Auditorium. Doors at Hill Auditorium open for family and guests at 12:00pm. Tickets are not required for this event.
Because most of the seating on the main floor of Hill Auditorium is reserved for the graduates, families and guests should plan to sit in the first or second balcony. More about Rackham’s ceremony, including information for people with disabilities. Reception immediately following on the lawn between Hill Auditorium and Rackham.
Kinesiology’s ceremony is Friday, May 1, at 8:00pm at Hill Auditorium. Students report for gowning at the Michigan League Ballroom no later than 7:00pm. Doors at Hill Auditorium open for family and guests at 7:30pm. Tickets are not required for this event.
Because most of the seating on the main floor of Hill Auditorium is reserved for the graduates, families and guests should plan to sit in either the far back of the main floor or the first or second balcony.
Reception for graduates and guests is at the Michigan League Ballroom immediately following the ceremony. The ceremony usually runs from 8:00-9:30pm and the reception goes until about 10:30pm. Please be sure to invite your guests to the reception, where they can meet Kinesiology faculty and staff.
This is one of the busiest nights of the year in Ann Arbor. Make lodging arrangements early – a year ahead, if possible. If you're dining at a restaurant before the Kinesiology ceremony, be sure to make your dinner reservations well in advance and allow plenty of time to eat. Also, plan extra time for getting around town and parking.
