Career Planning Timeline


Freshman Year

  • Begin developing relationships with your professors by visiting them during office hours
  • Develop a time management and study plan
  • Establish a good academic record
  • Use your English and Public Speaking courses to develop strong communication skills
  • Meet with your academic advisor at least once each semester
  • Learn about the resources available to you on campus
  • Get involved in a Kinesiology student group and/or other campus wide student groups
  • Create a resume
  • Attend Kinesiology Office of Student Services (OSS) events
  • Do some informational interviewing with people in professions you are interested in

Sophomore Year

  • Continue building relationships with your professors
  • Be actively involved in a Kinesiology and/or campus organization
  • Build a strong academic record
  • Get experience in your field; consider research, volunteer work, internships, etc.
  • Shadow someone in a profession that you may be interested in
  • Develop good writing, public speaking, computer, and critical thinking skills
  • Update your resume
  • Attend Kinesiology OSS events
  • Begin talking with professors or advisors about graduate school and career options

Junior Year

  • Keep building relationships with faculty members
  • Continue to develop writing, public speaking, computer, and critical thinking skills
  • Get more experience in your field through an internship, volunteer work or research
  • Explore graduate school options
  • Register for graduate admissions tests
  • Attend Kinesiology OSS events
  • Attend U-M Career Center events and workshops including job fairs
  • Register with the U-M Career Center
  • Attend job fairs and information sessions around campus and the community related to your field
  • Attend a regional or national conference of a professional organization in your field
  • Obtain leadership positions in organizations you are involved in
  • Make a network list and begin building stronger relationships with those people
  • Update your resume

Senior Year

  • Meet with your academic advisor for a senior audit
  • Apply for graduation
  • Finalize your resume and prepare to send to potential employers or graduate schools
  • Contact your network list to let them know that you are graduating and to share your future plans
  • Attend Kinesiology OSS events
  • Attend U-M Career Center and community events related to your field, workshops, and job fairs
  • Update your Career Center Connector profile and utilize the system regularly
  • Participate in mock interviews at the U-M Career Center
  • Complete graduate school applications
  • Visit potential graduate schools
  • Conduct an organized job search- allot regular time to your search, keep accurate and detailed records
  • Continue to strengthen leadership skills through organization involvement
  • Attend a regional or national conference of a professional organization in your field
