Peer Advisors
Make new friends and build your resume -- become a peer advisor!
Peer advisors are current Kinesiology students who assist the Office of Student Services (OSS) with Summer/Fall Orientation for incoming freshmen and transfer students and a number of other events throughout the school year. This is a paid position which ranges between $8.50-9.00 an hour.
During freshmen orientation, peer advisors assist the OSS by helping freshmen register for classes, answering any questions they might have, and helping to acquaint them with Kinesiology and the University in general. Peer advisors play a crucial role within Kinesiology. Their student experiences provide us with valuable input as we plan and implement orientation each year.
If you're a current student and plan on being in Ann Arbor over the spring and/or summer, this is a perfect opportunity to earn money and have fun! The time commitment can vary depending on your availability from May - August. The complete schedule of dates and time commitments is on the application and time availability forms. The pay is approximately $8.50-9/hour, including paid training, which takes place towards the end of May.
Here's what our students have to say about the peer advising experience:
“Being a peer advisor is one of the best experiences for a Michigan student to have. It is the perfect opportunity to share my love of Michigan with incoming freshmen, and help them fall in love with the institution. As an out-of-state freshman, I was overwhelmed with my orientation process, and the peer advisors helped me become comfortable with the University and feel part of the Michigan family.
“I feel that I have touched many people's lives by helping new students become acclimated to the University. I have formed lifelong friendships with fellow peers, new students and OSS staff. I cannot imagine my Michigan experience without the past two summers of being a peer advisor.”
—Rebecca Chinsky
Senior, Physical Education
“Peer advisor is a special position. It is a tremendous opportunity to provide one of the first positive experiences for students setting foot on the U-M campus for the first time. As a recent graduate with a lot of knowledge of campus life, I see peer advising as a great way to give back to the University of Michigan and to help others the same way others helped me. It is a very rewarding feeling. I also enjoy the camaraderie amongst the group of peer advisors. It makes the job a lot of fun and creates a very positive atmosphere at Orientation.”
