Graduate Advising
Advising in the Kinesiology graduate programs:
Doctoral program. Advising in the doctoral program is the primary responsibility of each doctoral student's mentor. The mentor and student:
- choose an appropriate course of study, identifying skill areas and courses that address those particular areas;
- select appropriate research experiences, including work in the mentor's research area as well as the outside research rotation;
- determine the substantive and methodological areas to be evaluated by the student's qualifying examinations;
- work together to ultimately decide the area and design for the doctoral dissertation. They are assisted in these processes by a Guidance Committee, typically convened during the first year, a Qualifying Examination Committee, convened during the second year, and a Dissertation Committee, usually convened at some point during the student's third year in the program.
More specific information on this process is available in the on-line description of the Graduate Program.
Master's program. Each student accepted into one of the three Master's program tracks (Comprehensive, Ph.D. preparation, Specialist: Sport Management) is assigned a first-year advisor. The role of the advisor is to help orient the student to the University, to the Division, and to a particular program of study. Advisors assist first-year Master's students in course selection as well as provide advice about other experiences students may wish to take advantage of (e.g., research activities, field experiences, internships). During their time in the program, students are encouraged to interact with and seek advising from multiple members of the graduate faculty.
